The Pittsburgh Latino Health Advocacy and Leadership Program (LHAL) is
using a technique known in public health as “Photovoices” to capture community
themes and strengths using photographic images. LHAL has mounted an
exhibit at Pittsburgh Filmmakers from February 24 through April 4, 2006.
This exhibit demonstrates the themes and strengths of the Greater Pittsburgh
area Latino community and is one of four assessments needed for the “Mobilizing
for Action through Partnerships and Planning” (MAPP) community health assessment
process. This exhibit of still and video images, as well as written text,
will be accompanied by several special lectures or dialogue sessions.
| This is the post card invitation that was created by Gern Roberts, graphic designer for Pittsburgh
Filmmakers, for “Latino Photovoices.” Postcard images are from several Pittsburgh
area Latino artists and health advocates and were a part of either the “works in progress”
show or the final Photovoices exhibit. Very special thanks to George Davis who curated
the Photovoices exhibition for Pittsburgh Filmmakers. For more information on Pittsburgh
Filmmakers, see www.pghfilmmakers.org |
The goal of this exhibit is to increase awareness and support of public
health, medical provider and policy-makers of the Latino culture
and its health. The lead artist for the Pittsburgh exhibition
is Maritza Mosquera of Ecuador who is well known nationally
for her work in dialogue aimed at combating racism using images
and thoughtful processes. She is assisted by Fiona Wilson,
a promising young Latina graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s
Fine Arts program. Most of the work in this exhibit has been
shot by members of the local Latino community, not by professional
artists. The Photovoices project team has been working since
May 2005 to assemble the exhibit. A “works
in progress” exhibit was mounted in October of 2005 at the Artist Image
Resource Gallery in the Northside of the City of Pittsburgh.
Opening night was very well attended by members of many countries
of origin. If you would like
to know more about the Photovoices process and how you might
be able to do this in my community, contact
